Four incredible college students will be traveling to Ghana at the end of May to participate in our inaugural Summer Collegiate Internship Program. Our interns will be staying and working on projects at our Care Center in Ghana for seven weeks, so we asked them to share a bit about their lives and how they are looking forward to their time with the Touch A Life kids.

Today we are introducing Casey Flow – welcome, Casey!

CaseyFlowTell us a little about yourself – the college you attend, your major, any career plans, etc.

My name is Casey Flow and I am a freshman at Abilene Christian University. I am majoring in Child and Family Services with a minor in Psychology. I am leaning towards going into marriage and family therapy as a career. I love kids and families and would love to work with them in the future.

How did you first hear about Touch A Life?

I heard about Touch A Life through my home church, Harpeth Hills. Also, Jamie and Lauren Burton were my coaches in the youth group. They have become some good friends of mine and they lead the trip when I first went to Ghana.

What prompted you to apply for our internship program?

I had such an amazing experience while at the Touch A Life Care Center that when I got home I couldn’t stop thinking about the kids. I loved my time in Africa and knew I wanted to go back soon. When I heard Touch A Life was accepting applications for interns, there was no hesitation. I knew I wanted to apply because what better way to spend my summer than being in West Africa at the Care Center with awesome people.

Since you’ve been to Ghana with Touch A Life before, what impacted you the most while you were visiting our Care Center?

I fell in love with everything about Touch A Life when I went two summers ago with my church youth group. We spent about five days with the kids. We got to hang out with them, work along side them on a project, and we got to worship with them, which was my favorite part. I loved getting to see how they worshipped. They looked like they were having so much fun dancing and singing. It made me think about the way I worship sometimes. We are singing praises to God and we should always be joyful.

What are your goals for your time in Ghana this summer?

I am so excited about this summer and all that I am going to experience. I hope to be involved in as much as I can, maybe that means helping the cooks or just being with the kids. I want to get to know the kids and be a part of their lives. I want to be intentional during the seven weeks. It seems like a long time, but I know it is going to fly by. I hope that when I leave, I have left my mark on that place and their lives.

Tell us a little bit about any of your other travels!

I have been going to Honduras since I was in second grade. My family decided to do something different than going to the beach with every other family. It was one of the most eye opening experiences of my life. So we kept going back to serve and each year we saw the same people and formed relationships with them. My family has also gone on non-mission trips as well. We have been to the San Destin area many summers. Last summer we went to Hilton Head and loved it. We love to walk on the beach and ride bikes while we are there.

How has your family and community supported you as you prepare for the internship?

My family is so excited for me. They have been so supportive and encouraging through this whole process. My sister has been to Africa several times on mission trips, and then to adopt her son, Wyatt. Also, my friends both back home and at college have been so supportive. They are constantly checking in on me and seeing where I am in the process of getting ready to go. They have been praying for and over me, and are so eager to hear about my time there when I return.
